a worm in my apple: the free craft that started it all

one apple, one worm, one slit. pull him out by the head. push him back in. repeat forty times.

why this one is free

Because it's the best way to explain what I make. A colouring page sits there. This apple has a worm that lives inside it, and a child who decides when he comes out. That's the whole idea behind every e-book in the shop.

how it goes

  1. Print the page at actual size on plain A4.
  2. A grown-up cuts the one slit in the apple. That's the only fiddly part.
  3. Your child cuts out the apple and the worm. The shapes are big on purpose.
  4. Follow the steps on the page for the band on the back, then slide the worm in.

Then hand it over and watch.

the grown-up bit

The band on the back is glued by its two ends only. Glue in the middle closes the tunnel, and the worm has nowhere to go.

if it doesn't work

  • worm stuck? check the band. glue in the middle, see above.
  • worm too floppy? glue him onto a scrap of cereal box before cutting.
  • slit torn? a piece of sticky tape on the back. good as new.

ways to play once it's made

  • hide and seek: one hides the worm, the other guesses if he's in or out.
  • count the pulls before the worm gets tired.
  • make two and have a worm race. if you have twins, you'll have to anyway.

get it

Pop in your email and the PDF lands in your inbox. You'll also hear from me when a new craft is ready, never daily.
